Hello Everyone,

Quick apology (its a long one - but its well worth reading).

Basically, this is just to invite everyone to join other CMF (Christian Medical Fellowship) groups across the UK & Ireland in a week of Prayer (Feb. 26th - Mar. 4th) to see God's Kingdom built. (Good timing after our mission week).

Attached is a powerpoint presentation with prayer points for other universities, as well as ours. Please take time to go through these - the first few pages are slightly CMF focused, however, we can use these as pointers to remember the work UCCF does, and to pray for Steph and Zoe (our UCCF staff Workers).

The first slide gives suggestions on how to run this. God Willing we should have a room booked for next thursday morning's PRAYER BREAKFAST- (details would be given nearer the time). It'd be great to see you all there - Good encouragement.

We will be looking at theme of "God's Character" in a wide variety of ways, from love and giving to sacrifice and MISSION.... and this term promises to be FULL and exciting.

Get prepared to be involved in reaching out to our George's community and to have FUN doing God's work.

The weekend away is an excellent opportunity to grow in your faith, and get to know each other better.

Travel together by train to Banstead, Surrey
Short talk by the Assistant Pastor of Banstead Baptist Church (where we will be staying!)

"What has Faith got to do with Medicine?"- A talk by Dr. Alex Bunn a former CMF (Christian Medical Fellowship) staffworker; a continuation in our theme of talks about our identity.

This will prove to be an enlightened time with a qualified doctor and seasoned speaker. To all those who are looking to be in the healthcare field (as most of us are, or we wouldn't be in George's!), I believe we can learn something new from this speaker whatever your level of training or course.

The time of the year has come where we have to hand over to the next committee and start preparing for a new academic year. With exams and the like, it is easy to lose focus and be consumed with stress and anxiety. However, be encouraged, for God who loves us so deeply promises in Prov. 3:5-6

"Trust in the Lord with all you r heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In ALL your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path."

We'd really like to see as many of you there tonight to stand united as we seek God for this new year and for the new committee.

ASHA!!!

Hey everyone,

Hope you are all okay :-)

Just wanted to remind you all about ASHA coming to George's next Tuesday.

ASHA are a Charity based in India working in the slums in Delhi.

Freddy Martin who founded the charity with the vision of his wife will
be com ing to speak.

They work to bring health care provision to those in the slums, and
train local women to be able to act as Health Advisors for their own
people. They also are working to improving living conditions, housing
and education.

It is a fantastic opportunity to hear about what a difference medicine
can make in the third world. GREAT ELECTIVE OPPORTUNITIES.... or
summer holidays.....

It will be a great evening... Please invite Christians and
Non-Christians... it will be interesting and accessible to all.

Next 2 Tuesdays!

Last Tuesday, a group of 9 of us went to Kings College Christian Union for the evening, and it was really enjoyable. It was very encouraging to see other Christians who ar e working to spread the gospel in their universities, and it was great to make friends with them and get to know them a bit better.... we hope that in the future we will be able to work more closely with the London Christian Unions....

Anyway, so, this coming Tuesday we are going to GKT Christian Union (Guys, Kings & St Thomas'). They are a medical school like us, quite near to London Bridge.... I really hope that lots of you guys can join us in visiting them... we already know a few of the Christian Union, and they will be very nice :-)

Their meeting is at 5.30pm, so we will be meeting at Tooting Broadway Tube Station at 4.50pm and travelling up together.

And next week we will be all back together at St George's for a talk by a group called ASHA.... (some of you older ones will have heard them before, but all will definitely like it, and INVITE YOUR FRIENDS!!) They are a group based in Delhi in India, and Freddy Martin who is coming to talk is the founder of this charity that works in the slums in Delhi to improve health care and education. GREAT ELECTIVE OPPORTUNITIES!!! (OR SUMMER HOLIDAYS......)

Ok, so that is at 7pm on Tuesday 23rd May in Boardroom 4.....

Bible School

Hey guys,

Welcome back!!! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday... and for those who didn't, you've had your turn, don't be jealous ;-) We have lots of interesting things planned for this term and we'll keep you posted for further details. Bible school is upon us this week on Thursday 4th May in the interview rooms and will be running every Thursday at 7:00pm.

Bible school is designed for students in a university environment and as such will not put unbearable strain to an already hectic term. As an encouragement, the bible says in Psalm 37:4,5 "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this"

The Bible School is a flexible four-year course formatted around the busy lives of students and the curriculum is structured as:

His Agony and Our Access

His Agony and Our Access

Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples . . . . 'Stay here and watch with Me'
—Matthew 26:36, 38

We can never fully comprehend Christ's agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, but at least we don't have to misunderstand it. It is the agony of God and man in one Person, coming face to face with sin. We cannot learn about Gethsemane through personal experience. Gethsemane and Calvary represent something totally unique— they are the gateway into life for us.

It was not death on the cross that Jesus agonized over in Gethsemane. In fact, He stated very emphatically that He came with the purpose of dying. His concern here was that He might not get through this struggle as the Son of Man. He was confident of getting through it as the Son of God— Satan could not touch Him there. But Satan's assault was that our Lord would come through for us on His own solely as the Son of Man. If Jesus had done that, He could not have been our Savior (see Hebrews 9:11-15 ). Read the record of His agony in Gethsemane in light of His earlier wilderness temptation— ". . . the devil . . . departed from Him until an opportune time" ( Luke 4:13 ). In Gethsemane, Satan came back and was overthrown again. Satan's final assault against our Lord as the Son of Man was in Gethsemane.

The agony in Gethsemane was the agony of the Son of God in fulfilling His destiny as the Savior of the world. The veil is pulled back here to reveal all that it cost Him to make it possible for us to become sons of God. His agony was the basis for the simplicity of our salvation. The Cross of Christ was a triumph for the Son of Man. It was not only a sign that our Lord had triumphed, but that He had triumphed to save the human race. Because of what the Son of Man went through, every human being has been provided with a way of access into the very presence of God.

Death Shall Not Hold Us

The power of the resurrection is a power that vanquishes every other power in heaven or earth. The battle was the bitterest ever fought, but death was the loser, Jesus the Victor. Because "the tomb could not hold Him; snapped like a straw death's omnipotent bars" (Amy Carmichael: Edges of His Ways, p. 192), sin and death and sorrow need not hold us either. The same power is available to us if we will take it by faith.

There are many tombs where we may be held if we succumb to the powers of sin and death. Hatred, self-pity, bitterness, resentment--these are tombs. By the power that raised Jesus Christ from that sealed and guarded tomb we may be delivered from whatever seals us off from life. Jesus came to give us life, nothing less than life, "abundant" life.

Do you know someone you are praying for who is living in the darkness of such a tomb? Has it seemed that there is no more possibility of getting through to him than to someone buried? Resentment has sealed him off from any approach. Pray for the power of the resurrection to release him. Refuse, by the grace of God, to be held back by his bitterness. Then ask the Lord to help you to meet him next time in the consciousness of Christ risen. Instead of dreading the meeting because of the thought of former disastrous meetings, face it with joy. Christ is risen! Christ is risen!

"May the God of peace, who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make us perfect in all goodness so that we may do his will; and may he make of us what he would have us be through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen" (Heb 13:20,21 NEB).
